Personal Training Certification:How should the Industry be Regulated?
Jan 25th, 2011 | By admin_certs | Category: Opinion
Although popular, personal training certifications have also suffered from credibility issues. Because the personal training industry is unregulated, less-than-credible organizations have thrived by granting questionable credentials; many which are often surprisingly easy to obtain. In fact, it’s not difficult to find some certifications that can be “earned” with hardly any requirements other than a valid credit card.
To combat these issues, the National Board of Fitness Examiners (NBFE) was created in 2003 to establish national standards for the industry, including the possible use of a licensing program. Since then, several states have proposed laws to license personal trainers based on the NBFE examination, although no state has yet passed such legislation. And although regulation of some type is coming, there are sure to be differing opinions as to which form it should take: self-regulation or regulation through governmental agencies. In the end, one outcome is fairly certain; the personal training industry will be regulated in some manner or another. The discussion about this issue was featured in Elite FTS.
