Fraud Alert: Medical Board Certification Offer Targets Physicians

Although this site doesn’t usually cover news for certifications that function like licenses, such as medical board certification, this article illustrates that even high-profile and semi-regulated certifications for the medical profession directly impacting the health and safety of the public are not immune to fraud and scams.  In 2009, an alert was issued by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) to its members after at least 130 complaints were filed concerning doctors who possessed or were solicited to purchase bogus medical board certifications in several specialties.  The American Geriatrics Society also alerted its members.  The scam is being investigated by government authorities.
